Orthodontic FAQs

What will happen at the initial visit?

On your first visit we will briefly review your medical and dental history before looking at the your profile and lips and how they influence your smile. We will then examine your teeth and how they fit together. At this stage we can discuss the following:

  • Is there an orthodontic problem and if so what is it?
  • What treatment might be done to correct the problem?
  • What is the likelihood of teeth needing to be removed as part of the recommended treatment?
  • How long will treatment take?
  • How much will treatment cost?

Do I have any say in what orthodontic treatment I receive?

You will be fully involved in the process of putting together a treatment plan best suited for you.

Will my teeth straighten as they grow?

Unfortunately, more often than not, they will not get straighter. This is because after a certain age the space available for front teeth does not increase. In fact, orthodontic research has shown that the crowding you see in the early teens is likely to worsen by the time you reach your early twenties.

Do I need a referral from my family dentist?

This is not necessary. Many patients take the initiative to book an initial consultation themselves. However, your family dentist is best placed to ensure that that you are dentally fit before beginning a course of orthodontic treatment.

Many adults seeing the success of their children’s orthodontic treatment decide to have braces themselves. There are no age limits provided you have healthy teeth and gums. It is important to see your dentist on an ongoing basis for optimal dental health.
Before you consider this option, bear in mind that a typical course of treatment may require 15 – 20 visits to your orthodontist. Dundrum Orthodontics offers you orthodontic treatment at competitive prices. Furthermore, we are available and nearby if you have any problems or concerns.
An attractive smile is a wonderful asset. It contributes to self-esteem and self-confidence – important qualities at every age. In this way, it can benefit social and career success.
As with any medical treatment there are risks and limitations inherent in orthodontics. We will explain how these can be minimised or eliminated before treatment starts. Suffice to say at this stage that the key to healthy teeth and gums with or without braces is proper cleaning and plaque removal every day.
Treatment and its cost can be tailored to your circumstances and requirements. Payment of orthodontic fees can be spread over the duration of the treatment without interest charges.
After a period adjustment, like breaking in a new pair of shoes, braces are comfortable.
At first doing a good job removing plaque from your teeth may seem difficult, but with our coaching and your perseverance it will get easier.
In general, treatment time can range from three months to three years depending on the severity of your problem. While there is a time commitment patients are rewarded with a beautiful smile and optimal jaw alignment that lasts a lifetime.
6-month braces are designed for treatment of the front six teeth only. There is minimal disruption to your bite and in the right cases, they are a simple and elegant way of achieving a great smile in the minimum time. Ceramic brackets are the ideal accompaniment to this quick and less invasive approach.
Most people realise the benefits of an attractive smile. The days of orthodontic treatment being for teenagers only are long gone. Furthermore, today’s braces are much less obvious and can be almost invisible as is the case with our Invisalign treatment.
Each upper and lower aligner is worn for two weeks. You remove them only to eat, drink (if necessary) brush and floss. As you progress from one aligner to the next every two weeks, your teeth will move until they have straightened to the optimum position.
Treatment time averages nine to fifteen months and the number of aligners needed varies according to the complexity of your initial orthodontic problem.
