What is a registered specialist Orthodontist?
Every orthodontist is a dentist, but not every dentist is an orthodontist. Your general dentist looks after your overall oral health, including check-ups, fillings, cleanings, gum care, crowns and extractions, and is the person you see for the day-to-day upkeep of your teeth. An orthodontist starts from that same dental degree but then completes several additional years of full-time, university-based specialist training focused entirely on one thing: the alignment of teeth and jaws. That means diagnosing and correcting crowding, gaps, protruding teeth and bite problems using braces, clear aligners and functional appliances, and knowing, from experience across hundreds of cases, exactly which approach will give the best and most stable result for each individual.
In Ireland, this distinction is a formal one. Orthodontics is one of only two dental specialties officially recognised by the Dental Council of Ireland, and only dentists who have completed the required three years of accredited specialist training and are entered on the Council's Register of Dental Specialists may call themselves a specialist orthodontist. It's worth knowing that any dentist is legally permitted to offer braces or aligners, so if you're considering treatment it's always wise to check the register before you begin.
