What is a deep bite?

A deep bite is a type of malocclusion (bite problem) where the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth too much when the back teeth are closed together. A small amount of overlap is normal and is called an overbite — a deep bite, sometimes called a deep overbite, is when that overlap is excessive and the lower teeth are partly or fully hidden behind the top teeth.

Deep bites are usually caused by the way the jaws have developed, a lower jaw that is smaller or set further back, missing or worn back teeth, or long-term teeth grinding. As well as affecting the appearance of your smile, a deep bite can cause the lower teeth to bite into the gum behind the upper teeth, lead to excessive tooth wear over time, and put extra strain on the jaw joints.

Deep bites respond well to orthodontic treatment.
