Orthodontic Emergencies
Unscheduled Appointments
Even with the best care, the occasional hiccup can happen during your orthodontic treatment. If something doesn't feel right, our team is here to help. Our doctors regularly assist with common orthodontic issues such as:
Loose Brackets or Bands
If a bracket or wire comes loose, give us a call and we'll talk you through what to do — the bracket may simply need reattaching. If a wire is poking or causing discomfort outside of office hours, you can carefully trim it using nail clippers cleaned and disinfected with rubbing alcohol first. Please then call us the next business day so we can arrange an appointment to put things right.
Poking Wires
Sore spot from a wire? It's easily managed. Gently nudge the wire away from the area with a cotton bud or a clean pencil eraser, and if it won't budge, pop a little orthodontic wax over the end to ease the rubbing. If the discomfort keeps up, just call us and we'll see you to put it right.

Missing Separators
It's common for patients to lose a separator during treatment, so there's no need to worry if it happens. Just let us know and we'll decide whether it needs replacing.
Pain from Braces
It's completely normal to feel some tenderness or discomfort in the first week after getting braces, and for a day or two following routine adjustments. Over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol can help, as can holding a warm washcloth or heat pad against your jaw.
