What is Braces Lite?

Braces Lite, sometimes called six-month braces, is a short course of fixed braces that treats the front teeth only. Brackets go on the teeth that show when you smile, usually the front six or eight in each arch, and the back teeth are left alone.

Because the scope is smaller, so is the timescale. Most cases finish in six to nine months rather than the eighteen months to two years a full correction takes.

It is worth being clear about what this treatment does and does not do. It improves the appearance of the front teeth. It does not correct your bite. If your back teeth do not meet properly now, they will not meet properly at the end, because nothing has been done to them.

That is a reasonable trade if your bite is already sound and the only thing bothering you is mild crowding or a small gap at the front. It is not a reasonable trade if you have a genuine bite problem, and we will not offer it to you in that case. A short treatment on the wrong case leaves you with straight front teeth and every problem you started with.

Who is Braces Lite for?

Adults, mostly. The typical patient has a healthy bite, mild crowding or spacing across the front teeth, and has either had braces years ago and seen some relapse since, or never had treatment and does not want to commit to two years of it now.

You are a good candidate if:

  • Your back teeth meet correctly and you are happy with how they function.
  • The crowding or spacing at the front is mild rather than severe.
  • Your teeth and gums are healthy, with no untreated decay or gum disease.
  • You understand that this treats appearance rather than function.

You are not a good candidate if you have a deep bite, an open bite, a crossbite, a significant overjet, or crowding severe enough to need extractions. Those need full treatment, and there is no shortened version of it that works.

The assessment decides this, not your preference or ours. If your case does not suit a short course we will tell you what would be needed instead and you can decide from there. There is more on the problems we treat on our conditions page.

What does Braces Lite cost?

Less than full orthodontic treatment, because it is less work over a shorter period. How much less depends on your case, how many teeth are being moved and how long it will take, so we quote after examining you rather than before.

You will get a written plan with a firm figure at your consultation. It covers the brackets and wires, all appointments including emergencies, and your first set of retainers.

Payment can be spread monthly, interest free, across the treatment, or paid in full at the start for a 5% discount. Orthodontic treatment is tax deductible at 20% and we will complete your MED 2 form.

One point worth making: retainers matter more here, not less. Front teeth that were crowded once will crowd again if nothing holds them, and a short treatment does not change that.

The Process

Initial Consultation

A proper look at your teeth, bite and jaws, and a conversation about what is actually bothering you. We take your dental and medical history, examine you, and take whatever records are needed, which may include X-rays, photographs and a digital scan with our iTero.

You leave knowing what we have found and what the realistic options are, including leaving things alone where that is the right answer.

GENERIC - Treatment Planning
Treatment Planning

We review the X-rays, photographs and scan alongside the examination findings and put together a plan specific to you. It sets out the appliance we recommend, how long treatment should take, the fee, and any preparatory work needed first.

This is a two-way appointment. We go through the alternatives, including doing nothing, and answer whatever you want to ask before you decide anything.

GENERIC - Preparation
Preparation

Anything that needs sorting before treatment starts. Usually that means a dental cleaning and dealing with existing decay or gum disease with your own dentist, since moving teeth in an unhealthy mouth makes matters worse.

In some cases it also means creating space, either by reducing the width of teeth very slightly or, where crowding is severe, by removing a tooth.

GENERIC - Braces Fitting
Braces Fitting

The brackets are bonded to your teeth and the wire is fitted. Nothing is drilled and no anaesthetic is needed, so the appointment is only uncomfortable in the sense of keeping your mouth open for about an hour.

Expect the teeth to feel tender for three or four days afterwards. You go home with wax for any bracket that rubs, and we go through cleaning before you leave.

Regular Adjustments & Monitoring

You come in every six to eight weeks, usually for about twenty minutes. We change the wire, replace the elastics, check the teeth are tracking to plan and adjust where they are not.

These visits are also where we check your cleaning. Plaque left sitting around a bracket marks the enamel permanently, so it is the part worth staying on top of.

GENERIC - Removing Braces
Removing Braces

The brackets and wire are taken off and the adhesive is cleaned from the tooth surface. It is quick, painless, and usually the appointment people look forward to most.

We scan your teeth the same day, so your retainers fit the position they are in right now rather than where they were a fortnight ago.

GENERIC - Aftercare & Retention
Aftercare & Retention

Teeth drift back towards where they started if nothing holds them, so retainers are the final stage of treatment rather than an optional extra. Most patients wear a clear retainer at night long term, often alongside a fine wire bonded behind the front teeth.

Retainer checks are included for a year after the braces come off. There is more on our retainers page.
