More adults than ever are choosing to straighten their teeth, and for good reason. You are never too old for orthodontic treatment, and today's discreet options make it easy to fit around professional and social life. Here is what adults in Ireland should know before starting.
Are you too old for braces?
No. Healthy teeth can be moved at almost any age, because the biological process is the same in adults as in children. As long as your teeth, gums and supporting bone are healthy, age is no barrier. Many of our patients are in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond.
Why so many adults are choosing treatment
Some adults never had the chance to have braces growing up. Others had treatment as teenagers but stopped wearing a retainer, so their teeth gradually shifted back. Straightening your teeth as an adult can boost confidence, make teeth far easier to clean, and protect your long-term dental health by improving your bite and reducing uneven wear.
Discreet options for adults
- Invisalign and clear aligners — virtually invisible and removable, ideal for work and social life.
- Ceramic braces — tooth-coloured brackets that blend in with your teeth.
- Lingual braces — fitted behind the teeth so they are completely hidden.
Your orthodontist will recommend the least noticeable option that will still achieve the result you want.
Does adult treatment take longer?
Not usually, though some adult cases can take a little longer than in a growing child, and treatment can only begin once any gum disease is under control. Most comprehensive treatments take 12 to 24 months, with simpler corrections finishing sooner.
Cost and tax relief
Adult orthodontic treatment in Dublin typically costs between around EUR 3,500 and EUR 6,000. Because braces and Invisalign are non-routine dental treatments, you can claim 20% tax relief through a Med 2 form, and most clinics offer interest-free monthly payment plans. Note that the HSE scheme is only for children, and the PRSI scheme does not cover orthodontics, so tax relief and any private dental insurance benefit are the main supports for adults.
Fitting treatment around your life
Appointments are short and spaced every six to ten weeks or so, making treatment easy to manage alongside work. With a discreet appliance, most people carry on with meetings, presentations and photos without a second thought.
